Like in most Japan citys, they have very nice pedestrian pathway so wheeling our luggages was very easy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-LR5tmqm\/0\/45df4742\/X2\/i-LR5tmqm-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>she kept pointing to wrong directions.. lol <\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it was off-peak season in September, there was not a lot of passengers. Using the on-board free WiFi, we kept an eye on reports of the approaching Typhoon Jebi which is suppose to hit after nightfall.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-DZdZV6z\/0\/eddb746d\/X2\/i-DZdZV6z-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>local aunties and uncles having a photography ball after departure<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-9dP5ghJ\/0\/1d2ae73d\/XL\/i-9dP5ghJ-XL.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>we pre-booked the outdoor seating... all of em<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, we opted to keep our baggage outdoors where we had the whole seating area to ourselves. Personally, being outdoors prevented me from getting sea sick but the boat was pretty stable throughout. We did venture inside the indoor seating area which was basically large spaces with tatami mats, there are no seatings (in 2nd class). Everyone had to remove their footwear prior to getting on the tatami and following Japanese style, we arranged our footwear in an outward direction too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-ZknQVzP\/0\/69603536\/XL\/i-ZknQVzP-XL.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>Footwear lining up facing outwards<\/code>. <code>So Japanese<\/code>&#8230; <code>sandals is Penang tho<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-rHQ7pn8\/0\/10cc3278\/X2\/i-rHQ7pn8-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>the best milk in the world, IMHO ... and i didn't lau sai<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After an hour, the sight of the cone-shaped shy Mount Rishiri (\u5229\u5c3b\u5cf6) came into view over the horizon. Someday will want to climb to the peak :). By now, our faces were so dry from the constant sea wind. lol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-DH4JKFS\/0\/e0cd813d\/X2\/i-DH4JKFS-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>suddenly the passengers all moved port-side and there is Mount Fuji... er... Rishiri<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another 45mins later, our destination of the day &#8211; Rebun island came into view on the starboard (right) of the ship. And soon enough, the ferry was slowly gostan-ning and docking on Kafuka port.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-VD44fMh\/0\/5a40ad7a\/X2\/i-VD44fMh-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>land ahoy! - passing inbetween breakwaters<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-Qqz8Qwx\/0\/d0094193\/X2\/i-Qqz8Qwx-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>Japanese passengers leaving the mats as clean as when they arrive<\/code>. <code>Not a single sampah<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We booked <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/travel.rakuten.com.my\/hotel\/Japan-Hokkaido-Rebun-Pension_Uni\/68480\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/travel.rakuten.com.my\/hotel\/Japan-Hokkaido-Rebun-Pension_Uni\/68480\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pension Uni<\/a> for out 2-night stay. Pensions are family-run accommodation in Japan and Uni (sea urchin) is my favorite delicacy in the world. It is located nearby Kafuka port and is walking distance actually but they provide free shuttle service upon your arrival so do inform them (email in English is ok) prior. The oto-san (dad) was waiting for us at the arrival hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-sNqbDmJ\/0\/03fa36de\/X2\/i-sNqbDmJ-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>Oto-san only speaks limited English and lots of gestures<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After a short ride, we quickly left our belongings, grabbed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rebun-island.jp\/welcome\/trekking.pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/www.rebun-island.jp\/welcome\/trekking.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trail leaflet <\/a>and headed out for a hike using the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.japantravel.com\/hokkaido\/momo-iwa-trail-rebun-island\/1904\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.japantravel.com\/hokkaido\/momo-iwa-trail-rebun-island\/1904\" target=\"_blank\">Momo-iwa trail<\/a> (Peach Rock &#8211; momo being peach and iwa, rock) which starts just behind our pension. The total hike distance is about 9.3km round trip with 500m of elevation gain. With Typhoon Jebi fast arriving, we did not expect blue skies anymore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-QfhHb8J\/0\/c51d54cc\/X2\/i-QfhHb8J-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>typhoon, why u come to this area?? <\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After turning in from the main road, the path turns into a dirt road and with no wind at all, it was pretty hot and humid. We had to peel of layers of clothing coz we were actually sweating a lot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-cNCmhj2\/0\/8dab3ca5\/X2\/i-cNCmhj2-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>mysterious road<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>About 15 minutes later, it got colder with the presence of a mist making visibility just a few meters only. It got worst and worst as we ascended higher. Thank goodness it was only a singular well-marked path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-RGJV4Hj\/0\/63b4c30b\/X2\/i-RGJV4Hj-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>thankfully no gorillas in this mist<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-qHMhmMt\/0\/014c8d72\/X2\/i-qHMhmMt-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>the view playing achilot with us<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After 45mins of mild hiking, we reach this area where we can see the mist and the winds howling with speed. We waited for 15mins at this stop hoping that the mist will go away but it seems like it wouldn&#8217;t let up. It kept coming and coming blanketing the whole area with white. So we decided to call off the hike as it would be futile in this kind of weather. See the video below : <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video controls preload=\"auto\" src=\"http:\/\/tee-too.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Day3-Momoi-wa-wind.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With a heavy heavy heart, we traced back our trail down the hill. As we were descending, we could finally see how the whole area looked like because we couldn&#8217;t see it earlier in the hike. If finally cleared at the lower elevations. It was 30mins of descending already at this point&#8230; we thought &#8220;we came this far &#8230; and it will be a waste if we didn&#8217;t finish this hike&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just then, two Japanese hikers came bouncing up the trail greeting us a chirpy &#8220;Ohaiyo&#8221; (Morning!) and happily hiked on up . From then, we decided to u-turn again to fulfill the reason we came to Rebun for. Hike.  Ikimasho!! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-RTmsZFW\/0\/3b3f2e29\/XL\/i-RTmsZFW-XL.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>wow... there are roads?? now we see it<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Up we go again!! By this time, the mist has somewhat cleared abit &#8211; exposing beautiful green fields and blue seas &#8211; it was simply breathtaking. This island is indeed magnificent especially viewing with our own eyes. Reaching the Motochi Lighthouse starts the slow nice descent to Shiretoko town (not to be mistaken with the other more famous Shiretoko National Park).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-hPFrQFV\/0\/7b7cf07d\/X2\/i-hPFrQFV-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>finally kau liao<\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We reached the Shiretoko bus stop and waited for awhile. We didn\u2019t have the timetable so we decided to walk along the main road until hopefully a bus will come along. We walked and walked&#8230;until we reach the Kafuka town port which is near the pension &#8211; not having seen a single bus passing us. Lol. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travels\/Hokkaido-2018-ORI\/Hokkaido-Blog-2018\/n-ZbQ833\/i-pG52mWk\/0\/af5576d5\/X2\/i-pG52mWk-X2.jpg?w=780&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><figcaption><code>Penang aunty walking along a social-distancing road <\/code><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After nearly 4.5 hours of hiking, we were really famish. Since we were at the port, we went up to the first floor of the Kafuka Ferry terminal for our lunch at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.takechansushi.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/www.takechansushi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Take Chan Sushi.<\/a> It has canteen type feeling with windows facing the sea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using limited Japanese, I asked &#8220;osusume wa nan de suka?&#8221; \u304a\u3059\u3059\u3081\u306f\u4f55\u3067\u3059\u304b (recommendation)?  She pointed to the menu of the day which is sashimi with rice&#8230; I&#8217;ll have it. so hungry d. We stopped by a &#8220;department store&#8221; for some tit-bits. Pension Uni is the best best best when it comes to serving up culinary magic. I still think they serve the BEST uni I&#8217;ve ever tasted in my life. The pension had a full house booking &#8211; but one meal left with an empty seat. We chatted awhile with the owners &#8211; until suddenly our friend came in for his dinner.
